Scoglio del Vervece

Scoglio del Vervece

DISTANCE FROM DIVING NETTUNO 20 MINUTES ON BOAT
It is a very small islet, half a mile off Massalubrense harbor, just a rock, but it is the top of a submarine mountain. Surmounted by a beacon, its walls drops off to an over 50 m depth, and they are very interesting at every depth. The distance from the shore and the main currents from the Gulf of Naples are the conditions for an extraordinary richness of marine life, including rare and endangered species, and even something not explained by scientists, yet, like a bleaching tips red gorgonia. 12 m deep, there’s a bronze statue of the Madonna, posed there by some devote divers in the ‘70s, subject of a popular religious feast. At Vervece there is even a wreck, an old 30 m cargo ship. It is a very nice dive, but it is not possible to start it from the rock, due to the long distance: the only way is to descend into the blue, along a rope, to 40 m, and therefore this dive is reserved to experienced divers.

Grotta di Mitigliano

Grotta di Mitigliano

DISTANCE FROM DIVING NETTUNO 5 MINUTES ON BOAT
Only for few divers...This cavern, sited on the north wall in the bay of Mitigliano (from the latin “Metellianus”, another roman lord) is about 80 m long, with a maximum depth of 15 m. The sand on the bottom is thick, so usually divers do not cause suspension problems. After the first 20 m, there is a vertical pit, with a breathable air hall. Going on into the cave, after a narrow passage, about 20 m long, there are two more halls, and another bubble of breathable air. Here, due to a natural water source, the sea water is practically fresh, and very chilly. In this strange environment live a very rare dark lover fish, similar to the inhabitants of abyss, called Oligopus ater.

Scoglio Penna

Scoglio Penna

DISTANCE FROM DIVING NETTUNO 8 MINUTES ON BOAT
It is a little sharp rock, high and narrow, at the south side of the bay of Ieranto, in front of Punta Campanella. It is an interesting dive spot, due to its particular shape. Its steep walls, pierced by a nice natural arch, are very rich of life on every side, specially on the open sea side, over 45 m deep and covered with red and yellow gorgonias. This is one of the most spectacular part of the sorrentine peninsula, and everything it is possible, as meeting large blue fishes like tuna or amberjacks.

Scoglio dello Scrupolo

Scoglio dello Scrupolo

DISTANCE FROM DIVING NETTUNO 5 MINUTES ON BOAT
It 'a tiny isle that closes the bay of Recommone, another beautiful cove adjacent to the bay of Marina del Cantone. Very simple dive, starting with a sandy bottom (where we go to anchor) to 8-10 meters deep, and continue to Positano. Cute a cave about 15 meters deep and the walls that descend straight up to 30 meters, the rich coral reef in the benthic life. Ideal for the first dive to be performed and at night, and where we find often with elegant Alicia Mirabilis, lobsters and bluefish.

Isolotto di Vetara

Isolotto di Vetara

DISTANCE FROM DIVING NETTUNO 15 MINUTES ON BOAT
It is a small desert island amid the sea, with a beautiful underwater cliff rich of gorgonias and small fishes. The strong currents from south enrich the area with plankton, allowing an incomparable richness of life.
Due to long distance from the shore, it is easy to meet large passing fishes, different kinds of tunas and amberjacks , even also in large groups. Around the island are remains from ancient and modern history: greek and roman anchors and amphoras from ancient shipwrecks are close to bombs and naval artillery grenades from the WWII. Unfortunately most of the archaeological items were stolen in the years, but the best dive site is the Scarpa, a sort of underwater mountain raising to 6 m depth, one hundred meters long toward Capri. It is easy to see it from the surface, due to its clear surface and to the clearness of the water.

Punta Falcone

Punta Falcone

DISTANCE FROM DIVING NETTUNO 15 MINUTES ON BOAT
The characteristic of this immersion is the descent along a rocky wall covered with yellow parazoanthus and from various types of gorgonians as the Eunicella cavolinii or Paramunicea. The reef ends at around 40 meters where you can see big cracks in rock big bream; the exploration continues moving inside the bay where there is a big rock that rises up to 10 meters deep, on top of which there is a beautiful cave.

Fossa Papa

Fossa Papa

DISTANCE FROM DIVING NETTUNO 15 MINUTES ON BOAT
The dive begins inside the inlet (very nice by the way) where there are about 15 meters deep and a uniform depth. Continuing to Capri, you can go down a terraced wall, ending at 45 meters, from here you can reach the isolated rocks on the sand, extremely rich of benthic life, where you can observe numerous large lobsters (only to photograph!).

Punta Campanella

Punta Campanella

DISTANCE FROM DIVING NETTUNO 10 MINUTES ON BOAT
This is the cape which separate the Gulf of Naples from the Gulf of Salerno. It was called Promontorium Minervae, and sheltered ancient greek and roman ships that here stopped waiting for favorable weather to proceed. Their crews, during the waiting, brought gifts to the temple of the goddess Athena, called Minerva by the Romans, to worship her and to beg for protection from the dangers of the sea. The temple was built on the promontory, and, centuries later, the Spanish built a tower on its ruins, still in good conditions, to defend the coast from the muslim pirates, the Saracens. As a consequence of these facts, this area is very interesting from an archaeological point of view, ancient anchors and lots of amphoras were found in the past. Here the bottom of the sea is a quick slope that deepens to over 100 m in the Gulf of Naples, but slopes slowly to less than 50 m on the Gulf of Salerno side. Weather and environment conditions are often very different from a side to the other, due to strong winds and currents, but these extraordinary conditions allow the richness of marine life that is possible to see here. Right in front of the cape, a big rock, emerging at a few meters from the shore, offers walls covered with Astroydes calycularis, at a shallow depth. On the other wall, southward of the cape, the rocks and walls are covered with red and yellow gorgonias until 40-45 m, with lots of small fishes.

Punta di Montalto

Punta di Montalto

DISTANCE FROM DIVING NETTUNO 3 MINUTES ON BOAT
Two hundreds meters from Penna Rock, the spectacular cliff opens on the large bay of Nerano, a little fishermen village. The dive spot at Montalto is under a high cliff surmounted by an ancient tower. Clear water and plenty of subjects make this area an underwater photographers’ paradise. The depth does not matter, the bottom is rich of life from sea level to 55 m. The wall of the cliff is very rich of corals. The gorgonias, starting below 30 m, here have particular colors, from purple to bright yellow.Despite the depth, the environment appears full of light , thanks to the clearness of water and the sun light, being the wall facing southward. Here is possible to meet groupers, breams and lobsters.

Grotta dell'Isca

Grotta dell'Isca

DISTANCE FROM DIVING NETTUNO 5 MINUTES ON BOAT
The first cave is sited in the islet of Isca, a private island once owned by the famous italian theatre writer and actor Eduardo de Filippo. After a series of arches, literally covered with Parazoanthus axinellae and Astroydes calycularis, we reach the entrance of the grotto, a vertical crevice only 7 m deep.
The rocky walls of the cave offer a unique scenario to the divers, with unbelievable tricks of light. Ascending, we surface in a large room, full of breathable air. Here it is possible to admire plenty of alabaster-like stalactites and stalagmites. Some of them are submerged, and are covered with the yellow Parazoanthus axinellae. The Sapphire cave is so called from the special color of the water inside. Surely it is the most attractive grotto in the sorrentine peninsula. The cave has a large main entrance only 3 m deep, and a second entrance, narrower, at 15 m. To pass the large main gallery is not a problem, being just 4 m long. The pool inside is a real subterranean lake, lit up of blue light from the sea, more than 40 m large, and the roof is more than 20 m high. A forest of stalactites hangs from the roof, and somewhere they join the stalagmites, forming alabaster columns.

Isole "Li Galli"

Isole

DISTANCE FROM DIVING NETTUNO 20 MINUTES ON BOAT
There are three possible diving the islands "Li Galli", which are composed by Gallo Lungo, Gallo corto and Rotonda. All beautiful, on legendary depths (it is thought that here has stopped Ulysses along its Odyssey and here he met the famous bewitching mermaids) with terraces that slope down to the cobalt blue of this fabulous corner of the coast (the seabed outside delel islands, degrade over 120 meters).
The cliffs are rich in coral, large sea fans with a shade of yellow and deep red of breaks and crannies where it is easy to run in families and croakers and sea bream fish (tuna, palamiti and yellowtail), especially in autumn and spring. Divings that could be subject to current and still a bit more challenging (depending on the side that goes to make!).

Grotta dello Zaffiro

Grotta dello Zaffiro

DISTANCE FROM DIVING NETTUNO 20 MINUTES ON BOAT
So named for the particular color that assumes the water inside it, is certainly the most beautiful and interesting of the peninsula. The cavity has a very wide main entrance, located only three Mt depth, and a second entry formed by a rather narrow passage communicating with the main entrance, just 12 Mt of depth. The crossing of the tunnel does not create any problem, being very long and wide as four meters. The water inside is a real lake of over 40 meters in diameter, surmounted by a bell air about 20 Mt high and surrounded by majestic alabaster formations of stalactites and stalagmites that at some point come to the cave join floor and ceiling.
